Description:

Her research program focuses on the impact of nutrition during pregnancy and childhood on maternal and child health. It aims to improve perinatal nutritional interventions and services that are offered to vulnerable populations, such as poverty, a low level of education or drug addiction. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach aimed at improving the nutrition, health and well-being of families.

Description:

His research focuses on the causes of social inequalities in health, including the impact of the social environment on the behaviors and priorities that an individual places on his or her health. He adopts sociological approaches to better understand the relationship to the body and health practices (diet and physical activities) among various social groups. He has participated in several studies on social inequalities related to age, socioeconomic class and gender.

Loïc Legendre
Master's student

Description:

Loïc completed his high school education at Lycée Jules Renard, Nevers, France. During his undergraduate degree in Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa, he was a member of the Geegees football team. He has received numerous academic awards, including the 2019 Usports Academic All-Canadian. Based on his own experience in balancing sport and academics, he is now enrolled in the Master's program in Human Kinetics (Sociology) under the supervision of Alex Dumas where he will focus on the operation of the Quebec sport-study program. Loïc is also a teacher at Lycée Claudel in Physical Education and Sports. His volunteer involvement can be summed up by the defense of the rights and well-being of domestic animals. He mainly fights against abandonment, mistreatment and the lack of information presented to adopting families.

Description: 

Maxime has received his B.Sc. and his M.Sc. in Physical Education from the University of Nantes (France). He has started a second M.Sc. in Sports and Social Sciences (Major in Research) offering courses on the fundamentals and methodology of research in sociology. His research interest lies at the intersection between the sociology of education and the sociology of sport.

During his graduate programs, he studied french Sections sportives scolaires (i.e. school programs offering additional training during school time to selected students ; differents from high performance programs) under the supervision of Bruno Papin and Baptiste Viaud. Using qualitative research methods, he aims to further knowledge on the effects of these programs and the associated institutional interests (school system and sport system).

 

Today, Maxime is doing his Ph.D. in Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa. Supervised by Alex Dumas and Bruno Papin, his research focuses on the Sport-studies programs in Quebec in order to understand what works, for whom, and under what circumstances.

Aida Bahramian 
PhD student

Description:

Aida has already completed a doctorate in exercise physiology at the University of Guilan (Iran). The theme of his thesis was on the regeneration of cardiac cells (myocardium) following infarction by stimulating stem cells through the intervention of intermittent physical activity. 

 

Her interest in health promotion led her to pursue a master's degree in Adapted Physical Activities and Health (APAS) at the University of Strasbourg where she discovered that social science and multidisciplinary studies are of great interest to her. As long as she carried out her thesis in a prison environment by setting up a health promotion system for incarcerated people: "Health Sports on Prescription in a Prison Environment". 

 

Today, she pursues her scientific and professional goals at the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa, where her research focuses on promoting perinatal health through physical activity and nutrition. under the direction of Alex Dumas and Bénédicte Fontaine-Bisson.

Landry Kalembo
Master's student

Description: 

Landry is an aspiring global health researcher with interests in maternal and perinatal health, as well as the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD). His current thesis research focuses on food insecurity and maternal and child health outcomes in a population of Canadian pregnant women.

Landry sits on the Board of Parkdale Food Centre, an Ottawa charity that builds healthier, more connected neighborhoods through good food, innovative community partnerships and challenging inequalities, to create lasting impact. He is also a new board member of the Child and Nature Alliance of Canada, an organization that works to connect children and youth with nature through policy, research and practice with the goal of having a profound impact on families and communities across the country. In 2020, Landry founded the Kalembo Foundation, a federally registered non-profit organization that aims to improve the health and education of vulnerable people living in Central and East Africa. Landry has witnessed the impact of research on policy implementation and program delivery in the local community and hopes to take part in high-level conversations to develop creative solutions in the fight against poverty. , illiteracy and inequality among vulnerable people, especially those affected by low socio-economic status, both in Canada and abroad. In his spare time, Landry enjoys writing poetry, playing basketball and dancing salsa.

Yanick Brunette, RD

Description:

Yanick recently obtained his honours bachelor's degree in food and nutrition sciences and is a member of the Ontario College of Dietitians. He is interested in social inequalities and their impact on nutrition and health, particularly during pregnancy and breastfeeding. He seeks to better understand how social issues affect the perception of healthy eating and how they influence eating behaviours. Yanick is a recipient of two research initiation awards (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program and Consortium National de Formation en Santé), which gave him the opportunity to be a research assistant on our team.

Jocelyne Labonté, RD, MSc
 

PhD student in Population Health

BSc in Nutrition Sciences, University of Ottawa

MSc in Applied Human Nutrition, Mount Saint Vincent University

Description:

Jocelyne is a Registered Dietitian working in maternal and child health research in Canada and Southeast Asia. Her primary research interests include micronutrient deficiencies, food fortification, global health, and nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life. Jocelyne is a recipient of the 2023 Ontario Women’s Health Scholars doctoral award.

 

Jocelyne began working as a research assistant with the Nourish to Flourish team in 2018. In 2020, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of Ottawa’s Honours Bachelor of Nutrition Sciences program. As part of that degree, she completed a variety of dietetic internships with institutions such as the Government of Yukon and Indigenous Services Canada. In 2022, Jocelyne earned a Master of Science degree in Applied Human Nutrition from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her thesis focused on maternal food restrictions during pregnancy and lactation in rural Cambodia.

 

Since the fall of 2023, Jocelyne has returned to the University of Ottawa to pursue a doctoral degree in Population Health under the co-supervision of Dr. Bénédicte Fontaine-Bisson and Dr. Frank Wieringa (a researcher with France’s Institut de recherche pour le développement). Through her doctoral work, she will investigate the effectiveness of a locally produced ready-to-use supplementary food on the prevention and treatment of malnutrition among women of reproductive age in Laos.
